… Of Mythology.

In this piece, I used the word Mythology in not such a literal way, and yes, one may think of greek Gods or legends that have been passed down in their family, but my dad was the first thing to pop up in my head. Like it said in Leslie Mullen’s “Chapter 5 - Truth and Myth: Myth and Meaning,” Myths are distinctive forms of speech, narratives that are familiar and reassuring to the host culture. I thought of “The Man, The Myth, The Legend” because he is that for a lot of people. In the sense of using my artwork as a narrative to portray beliefs and traditions centered around and of my dad, it is exactly that and nothing short. Every picture has its own story that he will be able to sit and remember one by one, some faint and some deep and rich with color, but in my eyes, memory also has a lot to do with the concept of mythology and how the narrative is passed down just like this quilt will be.

Instead of using a traditional book or piece of fabric, I made the bold decision early on that I was going to make a denim quilt, and I did. Looking at this 10x12 square quilt, you get a sense of my dad's morals and what he finds the most important in life. Telling a story through a technique that has been traced back to the 13th Century, and a major factor in choosing this more feminine method was to be able to bring my mom into this as well. Not only is quilting a perfect way to set a narrative but so is the fabric I chose to print my cyanotypes on. Denim has been used since the 1800s, and bringing those two together makes such a perfect story. The mesh of bringing two souls together while also telling one person's story has been one of my favorite experiences. To sum up, let's just say my dad is someone to be remembered.
